Some adults find routines essential rather than optional. The reason is usually structural rather than rigid.
They reduce decisions. They reserve working memory for what needs it. They make the day predictable enough for the system to stay regulated. People with sensory or social load already running near the top of the day often rely on routines because the budget for spontaneity is smaller.
The aim is not to be less rigid. It is to know where in your week routine is load bearing and where it is optional. Small flexibility within protected structure is often more sustainable than asking the whole system to be flexible at once.
