Disability Support Pension for ADHD or autism in Australia

How Australia's DSP general medical rules consider diagnosis, treatment, stability, impairment ratings, work capacity, support programs, and evidence.

Support summary

Disability Support Pension for ADHD or autism in Australia

Disability Support Pension (DSP) is an Australian income-support payment with medical and non-medical rules. ADHD or autism does not create an automatic pension. Under the general medical rules, Services Australia considers whether a condition is diagnosed, reasonably treated and stabilised, likely to persist, meets the impairment-rating and any Program of Support requirements, and prevents sufficient work. NeuroType cannot pre-screen DSP, calculate Impairment Table points, or supply medical evidence.

What this can help with

Understanding the official route and organising your own factual examples before you seek qualified help.

What this cannot do

Check eligibility, calculate points, predict a decision, or turn a NeuroType result into medical or benefits evidence.

Jurisdiction

Australia's Disability Support Pension through Services Australia. It is separate from NDIS access and support funding.

Official routes

Check the current rules and apply through the official service

Use this as preparation, not a decision

  • Check current eligibility and application rules on the linked official service.
  • Record factual examples from your own life rather than copying model answers.
  • Ask a qualified welfare-rights adviser about your circumstances.
  • Do not submit a NeuroType score or report as medical or benefits evidence.

DSP is not the NDIS

DSP provides income support and is administered by Services Australia. The NDIS funds disability-related supports for eligible participants. Each system applies its own age, residence, medical or disability, evidence, and other rules. NDIS access does not automatically establish DSP medical eligibility, and receiving DSP does not automatically establish NDIS access.

Use the separate [NDIS guide](/support/australia-ndis-adhd-autism) for support-funding searches. A website that merges the two into one “disability eligibility test” is omitting material differences.

The DSP general medical rules work together

Services Australia currently lists these general medical requirements: the condition is likely to persist for more than two years; it is diagnosed, reasonably treated and stabilised; the impairment rating is 20 points or more; Program of Support rules are met if applicable; and the condition will stop the person working at least 15 hours a week in the next two years. Meeting the general medical rules still does not settle non-medical rules.

There are also narrow manifest medical rules for specified circumstances. Do not assume that a condition label is manifest or that difficulties add up to a particular point total. Services Australia applies social security law and the official Impairment Tables.

Diagnosed, reasonably treated and stabilised

For the general route, current guidance requires diagnosis by a treating doctor or appropriately qualified health professional and medical evidence recording it. Services Australia also considers treatment already received, current and planned treatment, whether further reasonable treatment may help, and whether work capacity is expected to improve over the next two years. Reasons a treatment is not available or appropriate may also matter.

A place on an ADHD or autism assessment waiting list does not meet the diagnosis requirement by itself. A NeuroType result is not a qualified-health-professional diagnosis and cannot show that a condition is reasonably treated or stabilised.

Impairment Tables, Program of Support, and work capacity

Services Australia uses the Impairment Tables to assess functional impact and assign any rating. The applicable table depends on the impairment reflected in the medical evidence, not simply on the condition name. If the required points are spread across multiple tables rather than one, Program of Support participation rules may apply. Work capacity includes whether the person can work or be retrained for work at the relevant weekly threshold over the next two years.

NeuroType deliberately provides no DSP points calculator. It cannot decide which table applies, whether an impairment is severe enough, whether a Program of Support exemption or requirement applies, or whether work capacity meets the statutory test.

Age, residence, income, and assets are separate rules

A DSP claim also has non-medical conditions. Services Australia checks age and residence and applies income and assets rules to the individual circumstances. Current thresholds, Age Pension age, international-agreement rules, compensation interactions, and payment rates can change.

Use the official pre-claim guide and claim service for current questions. Meeting a medical rule does not promise a payment, and failing one online checklist question is not a formal Services Australia decision.

What medical evidence needs to address

Services Australia requires medical evidence for a DSP claim or medical review. Official material asks for evidence of diagnosis, treatment, prognosis or stability, and the day-to-day functional impact relevant to the claim. Appropriately qualified health professionals assess that evidence, may contact treating professionals, and apply the legal criteria.

Personal examples can help someone remember how a condition affects tasks and work, but they do not replace professional evidence. Do not describe a paid online report or NeuroType output as a treating-professional assessment, Impairment Table rating, or government document.

Questions readers ask

Can an adult get Disability Support Pension for ADHD?
ADHD does not create automatic eligibility. Services Australia applies the diagnosed, reasonably treated and stabilised, duration, impairment-rating, support-program, work-capacity, and non-medical rules.
Can an autistic adult get Disability Support Pension?
Autism does not create an automatic pension. The decision depends on the official medical and non-medical rules and the individual's evidence and circumstances.
Can someone get DSP while waiting for an ADHD or autism diagnosis?
The DSP general medical rules require the condition to be diagnosed, reasonably treated and stabilised. A waiting-list place or self-reflection result is not that diagnosis; check other available payments and support through Services Australia.
Does NeuroType calculate DSP impairment points?
No. It does not select an Impairment Table, calculate points, assess work capacity, determine Program of Support rules, or predict a decision.
